Wanda
I met Wanda at the Halls Gap Zoo in Victoria. I went there with the sole purpose of photographing her and I was much more excited than she was. She was gentle, calm, beautiful and heavy, really heavy. She was a reluctant photographic subject although she did love a cuddle of which I was more than happy to offer.
The heaviest recorded wombat was 38kg, he was 31 years old.
Wombats can run at speeds up to 40 km/h which is surprising given their little short legs.
There are three sub-species of wombats. The Bare-nosed wombat, Southern Hairy-nosed and Northern Hairy-nosed wombats.
